As a parent, I know how important it is to show up for your child—but too often, we’re forced to choose between losing money or missing moments that matter.

Now, New Jersey has a chance to fix that.

Senate Bill 172, supported by both Republicans and Democrats, would give parents dedicated paid time off to attend school events—like parent-teacher conferences, class plays, award ceremonies, and school meetings.

It builds on existing sick leave laws, adding a specific allowance for being present at key moments in your child’s education.

Right now, parents are expected to use their limited sick time for everything—including when their child is actually sick. That leaves little to no room for the kinds of events that strengthen families, build trust between home and school, and support student success.

And research shows: when parents are engaged in their children’s school lives, kids do better. They attend more regularly, score higher, and are less likely to engage in risky behavior later in life. This isn’t just good for families—it’s good for New Jersey’s future.

No parent should have to sit out their child’s big moments just because they can’t afford to miss work.

We’re calling on the New Jersey Legislature to pass Senate Bill 172 now — and give working parents the time they need to show up, stay involved, and support their children’s education.
