The first (and very positive) response to the petition has been received from Lord Manners, the Official Verderer for the Verderers of the New Forest in a statement that was given to the press. I understand that the Verderers have also indicated that they would be willing to contribute to the cost of the Feasibility Study, as incidentally am I:
"Roger Penny Way – Average speed cameras
The Verderers of The New Forest have for a long time supported the introduction of average speed cameras on Roger Penny Way. We have corresponded with both the current Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and her predecessor pressing the case for them. We believe that average speed cameras would reduce the number of accidents on this road involving stock.
The recent petition shows the depth of public support for their introduction. At a recent meeting with the Hampshire PCC and the leader of New Forest District Council this topic was discussed and the Verderers made clear their willingness to contribute to the cost of a feasibility study.
The Verderers are happy to participate in any meetings or discussions which would progress this important matter."

I am very pleased that the Verderers have been the first to respond. It can't be pleasant for their Agisters to have to go out to dead and dying ponies and other stock every day and through the night, and then to have to contact their owners to tell them the bad news.
