1. People are consistently speeding through the Forest including Roger Penny Way at speeds of 49 mph to 75 mph throughout the day and the night.
2. Current enforcement measures are very low (none at all at night).
3. Average speed cameras will provide a permanent 'police officer' on the worst roads.
4. They will acts as a deterrent
5. They will catch criminals (it's a criminal offence to speed) and if they are persistent take them off the road.
6. Cover their own costs - certainly to begin with - covering the cost of the feasibility study within TWO days and then their own infrastructure - unlike speed bumps and chicanes which are impractical for other reasons too
7. They can 'see' at night
8. They may help to identify vehicles involved in hit and run
9. Need less cameras than conventional speed traps
10. Protect PEOPLE foremost - be they drivers, passengers, cyclists, pedestrians - a fenced road would make these incidents more likely.
11. Protect the stock and other wildlife - those things that maintain and bring in income to the Forest (13.5 million visitor days a year at least)
12. Reduce the suffering of those animals and reduce the heartache for their owners and the work of the Agisters who have to despatch the animals if they are fatally injured.
13. Reduce the amount of insurance paid out for cars written off and stock killed
14. Reduce the resources spent on police attendance and other emergency services
15. Slower speeds are better for the environment
16. Prepares people for the advent of electric cars where collisions are even more likely because of the lack of noise
17. Reduces the pressure for fencing which will lead to a permanent degradation of the ecology of the Forest for all kinds of flora and fauna, affecting their natural behaviour, takes up a lot of land, resources, and requires constant monitoring and maintenance.
18. Less of an eyesore to most than the bodies of dead animals.
19. Stops the car becoming 'king' everywhere.
20. There will be more vehicles crossing the Forest as a result of increased housing on both sides
The only reason for not having them: "I want to be able to speed."
