Cabinet Member Clyde Loakes has stated the Council has no plans for replacing or upgrading the Orient Way Footbridge, quoting an old and out-of-date feasibility study for sloping approaches. At the same time the Council's Planning Committee approved the construction of a massive housing estate on the former Lea Bridge Gas Works which will have a new access onto Orient Way a few paces away from the footbridge. The estate will be car-free, which means that thousands of new residents will need to use the footbridge as their most direct and least polluting route for journeys to Hackney or to access the Marshes.
