Nelson City Council has approved the subdivision consent to develop the property above the conservation area into housing - including the discharge of stormwater and sewage from the new sites into the conservation area. Extensive damage is already happening from changing stormwater paths over the conservation area. The conservation area has lost many trees in its original native forest - trees that were hundreds of years old, as well as newer restoration plantings, walkways, and education areas used by schools and the community.
Community members have formed an Incorporated Society for the Protection of Kellys Forest and have challenged the decision by Nelson City Council. This process begins with mediation, which we hope will be successful, failing this the case may need to be taken to the Environment Court. Donated money will be used for the restoration of the forest and if required prosecution, legal and expert fees to protect the native forest.
Please support the protection of the forest! Every donation really counts.
