Need to Reduce Auto Crashes in Amelia County VA

The Issue

Amelia County highway accident safety trends are continuing to go in the wrong direction with 7 fatalities in 2025. Public Safety Department related budgets for 2026 are at $9.3MM. We are requesting the County Board of Supervisors to consider developing a Comprehensive Plan to address the problem. Key participants would be VDOT, District Court, Sheriff's Office, County Emergency Management and Amelia County Admin/Board of Supervisors.

VDOT - Address Accident Hotspots and Lower Speed Limits along business section of 360
District Court - Review of Current Reckless Driving and DUI fines. Currently most fines are at the lowest allowable end of the law ($251 for Reckless Driving vs. highest end of $2,500)
Sherrif's Office - More Consistent and Visible Radar Presence with focus on accident prone areas
County Administration - Provide Coordination on Implantation and Communication with the Public regarding all efforts within the County to Increase Highway Safety efforts.
