Need for a 300-Bed Hospital in East Gwillimbury, Ontario

Need for a 300-Bed Hospital in East Gwillimbury, Ontario
The Issue
Petition to Hon. Doug Ford, The Premier of Ontario: Need for a 300-Bed Hospital in East Gwillimbury, Ontario
East Gwillimbury, located in York Region, is experiencing unprecedented population growth. Between 2016 and 2021, the town’s population surged by 44.4%, making it the fastest-growing municipality in Canada during that period . As of 2025, the estimated population stands at 46,466, up from 34,637 in 2021 . Projections indicate that by 2051, East Gwillimbury will house approximately 127,000 residents .
Despite this rapid growth, East Gwillimbury lacks a hospital within its boundaries. The nearest facility, Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, operates with over 400 patient beds and handles more than 90,000 emergency department visits annually . This hospital is already facing significant overcrowding, prompting Southlake Health to seek a second hospital site. East Gwillimbury has proactively offered land for this purpose and is currently on the shortlist for consideration .
Why East Gwillimbury Needs a 300-Bed Hospital?
• Explosive Population Growth: A 44.4% increase from 2016 to 2021, with projections of reaching 127,000 residents by 2051 .
• Current Healthcare Strain: Southlake Regional Health Centre is overburdened, managing over 90,000 emergency visits annually .
• Geographical Necessity: East Gwillimbury’s location in Northern York Region makes it an ideal site to serve both local and neighboring communities.
• Available Land: The town has identified suitable land parcels, free from environmental or heritage constraints, ready for immediate development .
• Community Support: Local council has unanimously passed a resolution advocating for the hospital’s establishment in East Gwillimbury
What We Need!
We urge the Hon. Doug Ford, The Premier of Ontario to :
1. Approve the establishment of a 300-bed hospital in East Gwillimbury to address the current and future healthcare needs of the rapidly growing population.
2. Allocate necessary funding and resources to expedite the planning and construction phases.
3. Collaborate with local authorities and Southlake Health to ensure the hospital meets regional healthcare demands.
The health and well-being of East Gwillimbury’s residents, along with those in surrounding areas, depend on timely access to medical services. Establishing a 300-bed hospital in East Gwillimbury is not just a response to current challenges but a proactive measure to ensure sustainable healthcare infrastructure for decades to come.
Sign the Petition to make healthcare available and accessible to one and all in EG and surrounding areas.
