Reopen Connecticut Pools

As Connecticut prepares to loosen Coronavirus related restrictions on May 20, it is important that swimming pools are allowed to reopen in the state of Connecticut. On March 10, the CDC reported that "there is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs." Furthermore, USA Swimming has released numerous guidelines on how competitive swim teams can maintain social distancing both inside and outside the pool. Based on all of this information, it is clear that swimming presents much less of a risk of infection than many of the other activities being allowed to resume on May 20, such as going to a shopping mall or eating at a restaurant. Additionally, swimming pools have numerous benefits for both individuals and the community, such as providing safe places to teach young children how to swim and allowing for a form of exercise that both improves mental health and relieves stress. Competitive swimmers of all levels also need access to pools in order to effectively train. Further proof of the low risks and large benefits of opening pools can be found in the policies of other U.S. states. Of the 50 states, at least 14 have said that they would be partially or fully reopening their pools in the next week. Considering that new COVID-19 cases in Connecticut have continued to decrease, it is time for Connecticut to reopen its swimming pools.
