Former Gov. of NC Angus W. McLean is the current namesake of a building on the campus of NCCU, despite his well-documented racist past. Gov. McLean began his career in politics in 1898 as a member of the Democratic Party during a time when the Party employed racist rhetoric, fraud, and violence to regain political control across the state.

As Governor, McLean approved disproportionate funding for predominately white public colleges and universities and did not appoint a single African American to the NCCU Board of Trustees. Taking McLean's name off the residence hall is an important way for NCCU to reject the values of white supremacy and racial segregation and the representation of those values on our campus.

When we honor Angus McLean by keeping his name on a residence hall at NCCU, we honor a man whose values in support of white supremacy and racial segregation contradict those of our university.
