On Tuesday morning, Merci Mack, a 22-year-old Black Transgender woman, was found dead in Dallas, TX. NBC 5 has used her real, preferred name in their article reporting on the story, but also her "dead" or "legal" name. Merci Mack deserves respect in both life and death, and acts of insensitivity like this can ultimately contribute to transphobic violence. Dallas is known for being one of the most dangerous places in the country for Black Trans people, and if we want to do better, it starts with listening to Trans people and referring to them as who they are. We need to listen to Trans people when they tell us that deadnaming leads to violence and can even be considered an act of violence in itself.
