"My Lords, I anticipate a rush to the exit" - the words that preceded the House of Lords conversation about maternity provision in England last week...

That is hugely disheartening:

• Considering the Panorama episode due to air tonight,
• Considering the latest horrific findings that there has been OVER a 50% increase in the numbers of mothers dying in or shortly after childbirth,
• Considering the last person to conduct a national (England only) review of maternity services, Baroness Cumberlege, has added her voice to yours and ours (at 23 minutes 55 seconds into the House of Lords conversation) to say 'we are right' to be calling for a national (all four nations) inquiry and for a NEW plan for maternity (into early years' services provision)

Panorama will be hard hitting and horrific. 

But not as horrific as the state of maternity and early years services in the UK.  We have to do more, we have to push for change.
