All woman deserve compassion and emotional support throughout their miscarrage! I have been campaigning to reach as many people I can this week to get the ball rolling.
I have been really touched by everyone's comments of support and emails and when I read about your losses too it really helped me feel like I wasn't alone and gave me the courage to share my personal story with local media.
I can only hope in time that in time families will not have to beg for miscarrage care or proper support and with time we can make sure every woman gets the mental and emotional care they deserve to suit their circumstances.
The Department of Health NI commented on my petition. They said they are opening a new perinatal unit.
This was thanks to the wonderful efforts of another local campaigner (have you seen that girl?) it is fantastic that she was successful and shows the true power of campaigning that with action change can happen! The new unit will benefit many families who need it.
However with current guidance in place it is likely only woman who have severe complications or clinical indication for medical management will benefit from the new perinatal hospital . The majority of woman without complications or with pregnancy earlier than 12 weeks may still be sent home to expectant manage unsupported to loose their baby and could possibly suffer mentally because of it.
This is NOT ENOUGH! All woman and their partners are deserving of additional support.
If woman miscarry at home they should be afforded the dignity and compassion of follow up calls from health professionals to check on their mental and emotional well-being both during and after their Miscarrage and their individual circumstances should be considered first before sending them home!
They should be afforded the opportunity to ask questions seek guidance gain reassurance and to have early access things like coping strategies ,councilling or medication if needed from the NHS. This care should be extended to partners too!
Sometimes upon admission to hospital staff are too busy to provide adequate care or woman are too shocked to ask questions or will only want answers after time to process the idea they could be loosing their child. Which is why follow up is crucial!
After being refused physical care many woman will feel unable to bring up their mental health to the same doctors who refused them compassion or care or treatment when they were experiencing a loss and left them to deal with it alone at home and may already be at crisis point before they have the courage to reach out again!
Without proper help one in four woman will suffer long term mentally.
The risk of attempted suicide will increase dramatically for the first year.
Healthcare professionals should enhance their sensitivity to care for possible mental distress following a loss at any stage or age.
This week the petition has featured in the North Belfast news and Belfast Live. I was also able to get a slot with Frank Mitchell and his wonderful production team at U105 to chat on the radio about Miscarriage care. I would like to thank all the media teams for coverage of such an important issue and to everyone who has signed.
I will continue to campaign and reach out to media for change!
However change real change needs thousands of supporters and I can't do it alone!
So I'm asking everyone who has signed! Please help me build momentum! Spread the word on every platform you can! Twitter, Facebook! Share on personal accounts and buisiness pages. If you have any friends in media please ask them to cover a story for me !
Together we have managed to get over 1000 signatures and once again I would like to thank absolutely everyone who has taken the time to sign or share and the incredibly kind people who actually donated! Thank you so much!
