National Book Ratings

The Issue

There is growing concern about the content of the books being offered to our kids. Parents around the country are asking that books with profanity and graphic sexual descriptions not be offered to children. We do not want to censor or ban books, but we do want there to be a rating system to help make informed choices.

Some of the books in the school libraries of this nation would receive R ratings if they were movies, yet they are giving these books to minors in the classroom. Parents are not told the content of the books their kids are given to read. Book ratings need to be printed on the cover of a book so a parent or child can make a choice before reading it.  Parents can then choose, based on the ratings, whether or not they would like their child to read it.

The goal is to create a national standardized book rating system similar to the ratings on movies, TV shows and video games. These ratings would be performed by trained team members and would become the expected norm on all published books. The books would then be cataloged in an online system with more detailed information. All readers could then look up a book by ISBN and title to learn the content of a book and why it received the rating it did.

As a parent of four children, I know it is impossible to screen all of the books my children want to read. This is a great solution to help parents everywhere make choices for their children, and for themselves alike!
