Below is Kayne's post to Facebook yesterday on his birthday September 2, 2017!
The picture is Kayne and his suite mate Noah.
Cancer does not stop, so why should I? Today is my 18th birthday. I am Kayne. I am a freshman at LSU living each day to the fullest!
I woke up feeling like today was a day much like yesterday. Turning 18 doesn’t mean you feel different. What is different for me is that back in December 2016 I contemplated whether I would even make it to 18. The reality is today could be the last birthday I celebrate here on earth. I try not to think about that too much for obvious reasons. I am glad that I was able to celebrate today with the friends I have made at LSU already. They continue to show me their utmost respect, encourage me and care for me as I am on this crazy cancer journey. Thank you to Hogs for the Cause for the fantastic food we enjoyed and to the entire Simon Family for their kindness and generosity for hosting my party and our family while here in Baton Rouge. It is hard to think about what my future holds. In this moment I will keep doing what I do best: Fighting my way through the sea and making waves for DIPG!
If you had asked me on my birthday last year what DIPG was or what it stood for, I couldn’t have told you. Today it is part of my every day life and not a day goes by where it isn’t discussed or talked about. This is not a bad thing. We should talk about things that are hard. The only way we can make changes is by talking with one another in respectful ways.
Thank you to everyone that keeps continuing to support me and every new person that finds my story. It is difficult sometimes to think I am an inspiration. Each day I can see the love outpouring on Facebook to remind me I truly am fighting for a reason. There are too many children with DIPG. Most of them are younger than me and cannot or are unable to talk about DIPG the way I do. I truly feel like I am blessed to be their voice, giving attention to how they feel and what they are going through.
I continue to have good days and bad, still obviously adjusting to the whole not-walking thing. It is hard to want your body to move in certain ways and it doesn’t do what you want. I’ve loved getting Dementor, my service dog, and he’s been great for me. I love him dearly. I wish I could do more things by myself with him. The wheelchair/scooter limits me and my body is frustrating even to go to the bathroom. I, of course, want the best from him and with him. I post occasionally on Instagram with the handle: ‘dementor_the_moose’. Life keeps changing. I am accepting it and pushing on to live each day with grace and a goal. Whether that goal is small or big, I strive to achieve it and live on.
“You dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4
“They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” Hebrews 1:11-12
One of my favorite verses: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 1:11
