No Casino at Belmont Park

No Casino at Belmont Park
The Issue
Residents of Floral Park, Elmont and the surrounding communities are not in favor of having a casino built and 1000 VLT terminals installed in Belmont Park. A casino will be detrimental to the transportation infrastructure for the surrounding communities. The casino will be adjacent to Floral Park Bellerose Elementary School and Floral Park Memorial High School. A casino at Belmont Park will destroy the quality of life Floral Park and Elmont are working hard to maintain. It will increase crime and divert spending from local small businesses. Short term, the casino project will produce construction jobs, but over the long term, these jobs will become low wage service sector positions that will not benefit the neighborhood. Furthermore gambling is not a recession proof industry. It will be ran by Nassau OTB an agency that has shown the inability to run their locations at a profit even without any competition.
Though our communities may differ about a final solution for the Site A and Site B, there is one thing we can agree upon, if Belmont Park is to be developed, the plan should encompass a sustainable solution, offering a wide range of jobs, both low skill and professional that will benefit the surrounding communities.
