Much has been splashed around the social media on OROP, and the people are aware that the veteran community by and large are not happy with what is on the table.
Naturally, after the Prime Minister's declaration on Rs 8000 crore being released annually , and his comment in Chandigarh that the poor of the country have sacrificed for this, there would be a section of people who would be probably thinking, "Oh these veterans have become greedy" or " This is a political game now".
While the heart of the Indians is with the veterans, their minds are being influenced by the 'heads' of the likes of Mr Chetan Bhagat. So I will lay down just 10 basic points which will clear this thought.
1. The soldier has been in the habit of giving away his most important resource - his time, for the cause of the country, without a whimper. Because he believed in what he was being asked to do. And that was because he trusted his superiors and comrades. Today, out of uniform, his trust has been systematically eroded through his experience in the civilian world with which he is unfamiliar.
2. A soldier is used be cared for as regards his food, clothing, shelter and basic amenities like medical care and CSD. Because the nation needed him for more important missions. But today, when there is no sense of purpose, no obligation, and the Govt is denying him of his rightful dues, he feels cheated. Not that organisations like ECHS, Directorate of Resettlement etc have not played their role in creating this feeling.
3. The soldier has always providing aid to the people, whether in Internal Security duties, floods , earthquake or in normal course of duty in difficult areas. It is impossible to even fathom that after retirement, he would stake claim to what is not rightfully his.
4. Most of the Other Ranks (Sep to Hav) and Junior Commissioned officers are from the rural belts, and come from the communities of farmers, workers and the even more poor lot. As the bulk of the pensions are going to this bracket, these veterans will only contribute back to the society.
5. The veterans believe in their leaders, they can sense their intent easily. Therefore, when a leader like Gen Satbir Singh comes along and makes them aware of what they are missing out on, they will rally around him. You can never undo that. They believe him, and he has proved it amply.
6. The soldier has only seen so much money coming in which can make him live comfortably enough to meet his basic requirements. He just does not understand money beyond that. Therefore there is no question of him being greedy at all.
7. The media explosion is slowly making this soldier aware of the scheming mind of the country's politicians and bureaucrats, with a spate of scams in the recent years having been made public. He now finds it hard to believe that the politicians can think of his betterment without vested interests.
8. With what Modi ji promised the Nation before the elections on OROP, the veteran soldier expected justice. But the delays and excuse given later have eroded their faith in him. They now do not trust anybody in the Govt before they see it happening.
9. The soldier shouts simple war cries like 'Jai Ma Durge" 'Bole So Nihal' 'Har Har Mahadev' and that is enough to charge the whole battalion into action. The veteran community has found its war cry, "Sadda Hak, Ithe Rakh'. It will be impossible now to get them back to the start line.
10. Once a soldier commits himself into action, he does not withdraw unless ordered to. With the same mindset, the veteran community has committed itself into action. There is no turning back now.
