India needs a Bicycle Policy/Resolution - Bhārath Bicycle Sankalp

The Issue

From the day every toddler stands up and walks the sound that mesmerizes the kid is ‘Trin Trin’. The first mobility solution that is offered to that child is some form of a cycle. A clean, green and easy mobility solution to getting to the last mile. Bicycle seems to have lost its glory with our inclination to engines.

From school days till college days (masters), bicycles were our trusted partners. Why did I move away from it for 13 years is something I started to ponder when I started to ride bicycle to work in Pune in 2012.

As Sonam Wangchuk, rightly said in his youtube video, a false status has crept into our minds which treats bicycles as mosquitoes on roads. Following write up is my effort to get bicycle it’s rightful place on the road and in our lives.

Current COVID19 crisis and it’s positive impact on mother earth should make each one of us think (less) and act (more) urgently on this wonderful invention of mankind.

Bicycle is the greenest form of getting to places. It is easy to use, compact, absolute zero running cost while providing abundant health benefits. While the world is sighing with relief on clean air this crisis has blessed us with, It is high time to switch our mode of transport to bicycle in all major cities and metros. This is to ensure, we are not throwing away the gift of nature so fast.

The change needed is in our mindset. Our minds have been habituated on thinking of material benefits in each change. A document containing, a proposal on incentivising bicycle riders at individual and institutional level. As well as ponders on Bhārath Bicycle Sankalp/India Bicycle Resolution has been shared by the petitioner to the relevant ministers and members of parliament tagged in the petition.

Never before have we had as clean a air as now.
Never before have we had clean water in our rivers as now.
Never before have we heard so many chirps of our winged friends around us.
Never before have we supported our fellow citizens with this much of kindness.
Never before have we given so much thought on ours as well as others’ needs.
Isn’t it our duty to give this abundant positivity one slight push of a pedal followed by the other?

Let’s Bicycle.
