A safer India - Enhancing the safety of citizens
The Issue
Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. According to the 2019 annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 32033 rape cases were registered across the country, or an average of 88 cases daily, slightly lower than 2018 when 91 cases were registered daily. Of these, 30,165 rapes were committed by perpetrators known to the victim (94.2 % of cases), a high number similar to 2018. The share of victims who were minors or below 18 - the legal age of consent - stood at 15.4%, down from 27.8% in 2018. On the other hand, rapes by juveniles remained high in India with 3 minors being arrested for rape, assault and attempted violence on women and girls each day in 2019.
In the light of the dramatic foray that sexual crimes have made into the lives of the innocent citizens of India, we propose that we should take precautions and measures to keep these crimes under check and avoid it as much as we can. Simple measures and the checking of certain areas can improve the condition of the society to a great extent. Proper teaching of morals among the citizens, reduction in illiteracy, teaching of safety measures to Indian women and youth, proper lighting arrangements in darker streets which are prone to crime and increased security on the road can lead to a massive change in the regular crimes. The sexual harassment can be avoided and women will be able to live a better life without the fear of running into troubles. Adding and mending of older laws into a more strict form is a good move towards these evils of the society as the laws can keep them in check.
The fact should be propagated among the masses that both men and women have their own honor, men cannot or shall not make wrong decisions on their own, should not diminish others' agency and control others' lives. The wrong notions like boys have a higher supremacy than girls, girls and boys should not be friends, the victims also are a reason of why the crime happened, should be cleared from the minds of the common folk. Instead of teaching wrong notions, families should work on providing moral instead of discriminating the genders for their righteousness. The false notion that "provocative clothes" are causing such crimes should be removed as these crimes happen neither with a consent nor by any clothing styles. Instead of blaming the victims, the rapists should be blamed, or else these crimes will reach its zenith in the mere future. If we do not take precautions about what we teach in rural schools, in families, these things will never be solved.
India is becoming a place where social attitudes are such, where the victim is blamed, the women controlled, her consent ignored, her choice rejected, where traditions break the law, a place where the innocent suffer. If we ignore now, the lives of the many are still in danger in the upcoming future. If we stand up, the whole country will, the whole world will. Let's banish this crime of rape from the world, by standing for what we believe, for what we know is correct!
