Lon Gerrish is a name synonymous with wrestling in our community, but his legacy goes well beyond. He understands and champions the true value of a positive athletic culture and has been a proponent for recognizing the accomplishments of all Sandwich High School (SHS) athletes.

Over a year ago, we launched an initiative to garner community support for honoring Lon Gerrish at Sandwich High School. Despite his numerous accolades, the school does not have a physical testament to honor his significant contributions.

We are thrilled to announce that the Sandwich School Board has voted to approve our request to name the SHS small gym the “Lon Gerrish Gymnasium.” This accomplishment would not have been possible without the overwhelming support from our community. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this happen: the 1,176 people who signed our petition; the committee of his former athletes who kept the initiative moving forward; Trevor Elliot, Hall of Fame wrestler, who submitted a letter of recommendation; and the school board members who voted in favor of this request. Also, a special thank you to Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Ryan Janish, and SHS Principal, Dr. Shane Darnell, for their positive support and guidance during our campaign.
