Name SHS baseball field “Peckham Park”
The Issue
Joel B. Peckham, age 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2022, at Accentcare Hospice Inpatient Facility in Milton, MA.
In 1964, Peckham accepted a teaching position at Sharon High School where he and his wife lived and raised a family for 58 years. In 1968, Joel earned a second master's degree from San Diego State University and took on a new role of guidance counselor at Sharon High School, helping countless students find their way over the years. His innate ability to relate and communicate with teens led him to be an essential mentor and coach of baseball, basketball, football, and even field hockey. He served as head baseball coach at Sharon High for over forty years, eventually being inducted into the Massachusetts Baseball Coach's Hall of Fame in 2012.
With the new high school being built, they had to get rid of the old baseball field. They will be rebuilding a new one for the 2024 season, and I believe the only appropriate thing to do is name the new baseball field “Peckham Park” in honor of his contribution to the town of Sharon, Sharon High School, and its baseball program.
Let’s honor the legacy of this incredible man who guided so many of us who came through Sharon High School.
