SB692 Weekly Check In from Executive Board

Hello!

The N4CSGA E-Board is aware of proposed Senate Bill 692, and we have begun the process of reaching out to key stakeholders to discuss the unintended consequences of passing the bill as currently drafted. We have carefully designed a strategic plan that we believe will effectively share the student body sentiment regarding maintaining the student’s voices at the 59 tables across this state.

We understand that this bill may have invoked a multitude of emotions; however, we ask that you join us in following our plan and allowing N4CSGA to lead in this mission. We believe that we have developed an effective plan that is inclusive of the entire student body, past and present, and can deliver a thoughtful message to our legislators that illustrates the importance of the transformational student’s voice. 

We are dedicated to helping our delegation be involved in the democratic process, and have developed several outlets to involve the delegation. We ask that you use these templates when reaching out to the legislature so that North Carolina can present a united front amongst the CommUNITY college constituency.

As of now we have requested meetings with stakeholders of this bill and are awaiting responses. We have invited the sponsors and cosponsors of this bill and HB49 to our Wilkes Community College town hall on May 5th. We have worked to develop a strategic plan on how to best handle this situation. 

We have created a petition to gain signatures to bring along with us in said meetings when the time comes. We are currently at 260+ signatures. We would like your assistance in promoting this petition at your campuses and in your communities (with consent of the local SGA advisor and administration). This is open to anyone including the general public to sign.

We would also like to gather stories of how the student government has made an impact on our local communities and on the state board. We have developed a google form for students, alumni, trustees, board members to share their stories. We would like to share some of these stories in these meetings to show the power of student voices.

We are working to develop a one pager to bring into these meetings as part of the evidence supporting student leaders. This will include statistics backing the student leaders, support systems and more information. We are also developing templates for you to share with constituents. We do encourage you to use these templates, however keep your letters brief so they will be properly read.
