Mumbles slipway and historic harbour to remain!
The Issue
There is a flagged development by the Council to extend and lift the Mumbles promenade destroying the original iconic mumbles harbour we’ve known for generations! This includes the Antelope slipway along the Promenade Terrace on Mumbles Rd (SA3 4EA) - the new developments along the front will result in the historic waterway being destroyed.
**Recently there has been evidence uncovering parts of the wooden structure from the fishing harbour built in front of the slipway dating back OVER 200 years ago!
This beautiful harbour was used for centuries by the old Mumbles fishing fleet, captured in the above image from a postcard dating back to 1903! Storms have battered this harbour leaving it forgotten about and left. The Mumbles coastline joins to the recognisable headland point, making up the littoral we all associate with our Welsh coastal town.
Hopefully any residents might have more information or photos to pass on of the old fishing harbour so we can uncover more about its origins and stories! Please help by signing the petition to save this historic harbour.
(This is a very historic slip way located today opposite the famous Joe's ice-cream parlour also the closest slipway to Oyster-mouth Castle. As part of its history the Mumbles train new and old both ran parallel to this slipway.
Today it is used by Mumbles Waterski Club as their main water way entry to unhitch the skiing boats into the sea. This heritage club has been running since 1960 - celebrating its 60th anniversary this year! The first club in Wales to host a round of the Welsh slalom championship in 1964.)
