As many as 15,000 dogs and cats are tortured, killed and cooked to be sold at Yulin Lychee and Dog Meat Festival every year.

The Lychee and Dog Meat Festival, which is commonly known as the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, is an annual celebration held in Yulin, Guangxi China, during the summer solstice. The festival began in 2009 and spans about ten days during which it is estimated that 10,000–15,000 dogs and cats are consumed. The Yulin Dog Meat Festival is also a health and animal cruelty issue. Dogs and cats sold on the market are poisoned, sick, and dying animals. They suffer from horrible conditions during long-distance journeys and are forced to endure many days without food and water. Another problem is the torture that these animals have to go through before they are brutally killed in the streets and then sold for their meat. Also, residents in Yulin are well known for stealing animals from many family homes to be killed and sold. I dread the summer solstice each year because it brings with it the barbaric traditions of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival.
