Support Humane Treatment of Death Row Inmates

Support Humane Treatment of Death Row Inmates

The Issue

At midnight on November 9, 2015, Keith LaMar began a hunger strike, vowing to fast until the end to protest the newly announced restrictions being placed on the four prisoners classified as "5A" at the Supermax. These four were told they must surrender their books and CDs in excess of 15. They are the ONLY prisoners held at the Supermax who have been told they will stay there forever (until their execution)--they will NEVER be moved to the "real death row" in Chilicothe Correctional Institute and they will never get their security classification lowered to one where they would be afforded the same privileges as others at Ohio State Penitentiary on the regular death row. The newly appointed warden announced this additional restriction on books and music without provocation or reasonable justification. To be imprisoned in sensory deprivation cells without the minimal mental reprieve of literature and music is inhumane and unacceptable. These men have already suffered the torturous conditions of solitary confinement for decades while anticipating the day that they will be subjected to the ultimate punishment of being deprived of life itself. Demand that Warden LaRose and Regional Director Ishee meet Keith's reasonable demand for books and music in the time that he has left.
