I wrote this letter to Der Spiegel International ( a German online newspaper.)
Thank you for your article analysing Boris Johnson's Brexit .
I am one of those who has always wanted to remain in the EU.
David Cameron's 2016 referendum was an attempt to try and stop his Tory colleagues from "banging on about Europe". The question was vague and supposed to be Advisory, so the result was not binding. The result was a small majority for Leave. Unfortunately all the parties promised to honour the result. We later learned that this result was flawed by (Boris Johnson's) blatant lies and illegal (excessive) spending.
Theresa May took it as a duty, Boris Johnson says the result is "the Will of the People" and an imperative that he MUST deliver Brexit and as soon as possible. Of course it is also what he wants.
However now that we know so much more and that the best deal for the UK is the one we already have as a member of the EU, many of us are asking for a People's Vote because we want the best future for our children and grandchildren. There are also three cohorts of young people, now of voting age who have never had a chance to vote for such an important decision.
Yet, after one (some say two) million people have marched, have written to MPs, I have written to many MPs, MEPs, Theresa May and Boris Johnson several times, he says that a People's Vote is undemocratic!!
With November fast approaching I am beginning to feel like Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up Parliament, but instead I have signed Petitions, given out leaflets, written to newspapers, used social media, written to EU negotiators and started my own Petition, https://chn.ge/2xqqepA I have even applied for dual citizenship ( my mother was born in Germany).
I still hope that it will be possible for the UK to Remain in the EU for the sake of the EU, the climate, international justice, international study and the UK.
I shall continue to lobby MPs of all colours now that the EU has allowed the UK a flexible extension of 3 months.
I wrote several times to Boris Johnson but he has obviously been too busy even to acknowledge my letters.
We know that a million (some say 2million) people from all over the UK, marched peacefully in London to demonstrate that they want to Remain in the EU.
However Boris Johnson failed to take notice. He's so busy trying to leave the EU that it seems to be like water off a duck's back.
There are many more events planned before the new date of 31st January 2020 !
Please try and get to some if you can: Google the Anti-Brexit websites- there are plenty of them, including People's Vote and you can post on Facebook and Twitter, etc.
