Yesterday Boris Johnson sent the Leader of the House, Jacob Rees Mogg with two other members of the Privy Council, to Balmoral where the Queen is on holiday, to request her permission to prorogue (suspend) Parliament.
MPs, members of the House of Lords, and many of the British public expressed their outrage at the length of this suspension, and the timing of it. The longest previous suspension was in 1945!
MPs have just returned to Parliament after the summer recess, although a good number of them had suggested returning earlier but this was refused by Mr.Johnson.
Many did work through the recess, including Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn.
Mr. Corbyn wrote to all the Leaders of the Parties opposing Brexit, especially a No-Deal Brexit. With Mr.Johnson being adamant that he will "Deliver Brexit" by October 31st, a No-Deal Brexit seems increasingly likely. Mr. Corbyn suggested that the Parties work together, with the possibility of forming an Emergency Government, which he as leader of the Opposition, would lead. Unfortunately his leadership of this coalition was a stumbling block.
However the Coalition of Parties and other MPs, continued to work together to prevent Boris Johnson from delivering a catastrophic No-Deal Brexit. They decided that the best way would be to try to bring into law a motion forbidding a No-Deal Brexit. This would also allow time to hold another public vote.
There are various groups who are asking for this, now that we all know so much more about the implications of Brexit: People's Vote, Labour for a Public Vote, Best for Britain, Our Future Our Choice (OFOC), NHS for a People's Vote, The European Movement, which all have petitions you can sign and some also have sample letters for your own MP. You can also write to the Prime Minister.
If you look up Boris Johnson on www.parliament.uk you will find his address as an MP, but to write to him as Prime Minister his e-mail is: email.number10.uk. Don't forget to be polite!
As I mentioned last time, Mr.Johnson visited Frau Angela Merkel, German Chancellor and Monsieur Emmanuel Macron, French President, to discuss changing the Brexit Bill.
He also attended the G7 Meeting in Biarritz, where his friendship with Donald Trump blossomed.
Back to Parliament, the MPs have very little time to introduce a Bill & get it into Law before the suspension for the Conference Season, which some have also suggested cancelling or shortening, then another few days before 31st October.
I have written several letters to Boris Johnson but social media are also useful. Don't forget to be polite!
I also sent him a few lines from a poem I recently wrote:
But some say some war is just,
When it frees a population from a tyrant, like Mussolini or Hitler.
That too may be true,
But does it mean that the population freed must be forever grateful
To the victor?
Does it mean that victor can always feel superior and expect obeisance
As the tyrant did before?
because I feel that he is one who feels that Britain was the victor and that the EU still owes the victor for defeating Hitler.
Therefore he wants the EU to change the EU Withdrawal Bill (agreed by Mrs. May ) and take out the "Irish Backstop" which he and his cabinet dislike so much. The EU have asked him how he suggests it can be changed but so far he has no suggestions, and so the prospect of No-Deal becomes more likely.
I have also written to Jeremy Corbyn and Keir Starmer, Shadow Brexit Secretary, my own MP Damien Hinds, Frau Merkel, Monsieur Macron, Herr Donald Tusk and Monsieur Michel Barnier, EU negotiators.
I wonder if Mr.Johnson's actions are reckless, brazen, careless, desperate or even cowardly and I believe he is blighting and limiting the futures of our young people and damaging our economy, our standing in the world, and risking the integrity of the UK.
Please check out the various groups, sign their petitions, donate if you can and go on the Marches which they have planned if you are able.
THANK YOU ! ! !
