Thai Airways Intl - Support Your Australian Staff
The Issue
We all understand the terrible effect that Covid-19 has had on workplaces and employees worldwide. Many people are now without work, which of course affects them both financially and mentally. Not having the ability to pay rents, mortgages and utility bills puts a terrible stress on families.
The Australian Government has given a lifeline to employees who have been stood down by their employers. It's called Job Keeper. It enables those employees to access a before tax payment of $1500.00 per fortnight for a maximum of 6 months, which must be paid through their employer and then reimbursed by the Government a few days later. This payment can make all the difference to households who have lost a source of income and are not eligible for Job Seeker payments. This initiative must be applied for by the employers - it cannot be accessed by employees directly.
Thai Airways International in Australia employs over 100 staff. Many of these are long serving and loyal staff who have dutifully paid taxes during their employment and given their utmost to support the Company through good and bad times. Due to the financial issues that THAI has experienced pre-Covid19, staff who have resigned have usually not been replaced. As the staff care about their customers, this has resulted in hundreds of hours of unpaid overtime, all to assist the Company and their valued passengers.
Therefore it was a shock and disappointment when our Australian General Manager, Mr Sern Chupikulchai refused to apply for the Job Keeper initiative. Every time it was queried by staff, a different excuse was given, with the responses sometimes written by a workplace lawyer. Staff have endeavoured to discuss the issues further, however Mr Chupikulchai's response has ultimately been that further to consultation with the Bangkok Head Office, THAI will not apply for this Government initiative. Staff are concerned that there may be ulterior motive that has not yet come to light.
It is also disappointing that Thai Airways International choose to have their Australian staff go without any income, but still choose to support their stood down Thailand staff with a salary, albeit at a reduced rate. Mr Chupikulchai would be one of the staff still receiving a salary, due to being paid by the Bangkok Head Office.

We kindly ask that the acting Thai Airways International President, Mr Chakkrit Parapuntakul, ensure that Mr Chupikulchai and the Australian office Human Resources department consider the welfare of their Australian employees and apply for the Job Keeper initiative, with the correct information for the Government.
The Australian staff deserve better treatment than the dismissive responses we have received to date.
To the public, please support the Thai Airways staff in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. To the long time clients, you will hopefully appreciate the efficient customer service that we've endeavoured to provide under sometimes difficult circumstances and staff shortages. Please note that we stay committed to provide you with the excellent service that you as our valued clients rightfully deserve.
