Moving toward a walkable Newton for all

PETITION FOR SAFER STREETS AND SIDEWALKS IN NEWTON, IA

To the Newton City Council,

As residents of Newton, we care deeply about the safety and well-being of our families and neighbors. Many of our residential streets currently lack sidewalks, making it dangerous for children walking to , families out for a stroll, and anyone who relies on walking to get around our community.

We believe that safe, accessible sidewalks are a basic necessity. They protect our children, promote healthy living, support our elderly and disabled residents, and strengthen our community by making Newton a more connected, welcoming place to live.

We respectfully urge the city to:

  1. Identify priority areas within Newton where the lack of sidewalks presents the greatest safety risks.
  2. Develop a phased plan for sidewalk installation and maintenance.
  3. Engage directly with Newton Foward for input and updates throughout the process.

This is not just about infrastructure — it’s about protecting lives, building community, and making Newton a place where families feel safe and supported.

We, the undersigned, request prompt and dedicated action to address this urgent need.
