At present marriage certificates still only contain space for the name and occupation of the father of the bride and groom – while mothers are excluded.
Last year, due to you and over 70,000 petition supporters David Cameron accepted the need to change (http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/aug/18/mothers-names-marriage-registers-david-cameron), yet there has been no action so far from his Government.
What you can do to help:
Caroline Lucas has tabled a second Early Day Motion in Parliament calling for the Prime Minister to honour his pledge (http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2015-16/446) please ask your MP to sign it and ask them to write to the Home Office to find out why no action has been taken in 14 months.
It would be really helpful if you could ask your MP to communicate to the Home Office that this does not need to be a ‘complex and large scale process’ as they claim.
What is needed is simple legislation, a simple change to the certificate template – and to overcome the problem of the 30,000 registers in issue – an instruction to use an additional line to include the details of the names and occupations of the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom.
You can easily locate and email your MP using the https://www.writetothem.com/ website.
Share this update with your contacts and networks.
