I am a 19-year-old female coastal rower, deeply passionate about the sport. In previous years, my fellow rowers and I from Scotland, Ireland, the Netherlands and other counties, gained a wealth of experience, competing in numerous races including under 17, Under 19, Under 26, and Under 40. Unfortunately, the current age categories in place for the upcoming Skiffie World Championships 2025 are detrimentally limiting our participation.

There is a significant number of young, talented rowers ready to compete in more than just the under 40s category. The opportunity to participate in multiple categories would not only help individual growth and development in the sport but would also allow rowing to continue to evolve and attract more young enthusiasts.

The limited categories proposed for the 2025 Championships represent a significant reduction from the categories available at the 2022 Worlds. As a 19-year-old, I can only row in the under-40s. This is the same for many younger rowers and is a signicicant age gap with the potential for more categories. This move will limit participation and potential for these younger teams, while also adversely affecting the diversity and spirit of competition.

Rowing is traditionally seen as an older-generation sport. However, by making these changes and providing more opportunities for young athletes to participate, rowing can continue to grow. Rower representation is crucial for the evolution and sustainability of any sport including rowing.

Calling on the decision-makers of the Skiffie World Championships 2025, we urge you to include more youth categories for the 2025 championship, and not exclude our talented and passionate youth from being part of this sport.
