The Issue

Demand Safe, Healthy, and Mold-Free Campus Housing

Students deserve to live in campus housing that is safe, healthy, and properly maintained. Mold exposure in university dorms is a serious concern that can affect students’ health, well-being, academic performance, and overall quality of life. When students encounter mold, moisture, or persistent water damage in their living spaces, they deserve timely responses, thorough inspections, effective remediation, and transparent communication from university administration.

No student should have to choose between their health and their education. We are calling on the university to take mold concerns seriously, establish clear procedures for reporting and addressing mold, conduct appropriate inspections of campus housing, and ensure that affected students have access to safe accommodations while issues are being resolved.

Students Shouldn’t Have to Be the Inspectors
Students should not be responsible for identifying a potential mold or moisture problem, repeatedly reporting it, following up to make sure something is done, and then trying to determine for themselves whether the problem was actually resolved. While students should have clear and accessible ways to report concerns, the responsibility for maintaining safe housing should not fall on the students living in it. Students should not have to become experts in mold, moisture, or building maintenance just to feel confident that their home is safe.

The university should have proactive systems in place to identify, address, and verify the resolution of mold and moisture concerns. Once an issue is reported, students should receive clear communication about what is being done, what caused the problem, and how the university determined that the issue has been properly resolved.

Don’t Cover It Up—Fix It
The university should not rely on temporary solutions that simply hide the signs of mold or moisture without addressing the underlying problem. Painting over affected areas, replacing visible materials without identifying the source of moisture, or otherwise covering up the issue does not solve the problem. Instead, the university should take proactive steps to identify and mitigate moisture problems before they develop into larger mold issues. Regular moisture checks, timely maintenance, thorough inspections, and addressing the source of water intrusion can help prevent problems before they become more serious.

When mold or moisture is identified, the goal should be complete and lasting remediation—not simply making the problem less visible. Students deserve to know that reported concerns are being investigated, the underlying cause is being addressed, and their living environment has been properly restored.

Take Action
This all starts with acknowledging the issue and standing together to say this is not okay. By signing this petition, we stand together to demand accountability, transparency, and healthier living conditions for every student. Campus housing should be a place to learn, grow, and thrive—not a place where students have to worry about the safety of their own living environment.

Let’s BTHO Mold before it stands a chance.
