Modernize New Jersey’s Driver License Design: A License That Represents the Garden State
Petition to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and New Jersey State Legislature
New Jersey is known as the Garden State—a place of beautiful parks, shorelines, farms, forests, and vibrant communities. Yet our current driver’s license and identification card design fails to reflect the character, pride, and identity of our state.
The current beige and burgundy color scheme feels outdated and uninspired. We might as well add wood paneling to it. While functionality and security should always remain the top priority, New Jersey residents deserve an identification card that also represents the state’s unique heritage and natural beauty.
We are calling on the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) to redesign New Jersey driver’s licenses and state identification cards with a more modern and visually appealing appearance that better reflects the Garden State.
We propose that the MVC:
Introduce a fresh color palette inspired by New Jersey’s natural landscapes, including greens, blues, and other colors associated with the Garden State.
Incorporate subtle imagery representing New Jersey’s parks, forests, farms, coastline, and landmarks.
Maintain or improve all current security and anti-counterfeiting features.
Seek public input from New Jersey residents before adopting a final design.
Create a license that residents can be proud to carry.
Many states have modernized their licenses with designs that showcase their identity while maintaining high security standards. New Jersey should do the same.
A driver’s license is one of the most commonly used forms of identification. It should represent who we are as a state. New Jersey deserves a license design that reflects our history, beauty, and pride—not one that feels outdated and disconnected from the Garden State’s identity.
