28th of April 2018 IF THE GLOBAL PARLIAMENT OF MAYORS HAVE CONFIDENCE IN MAYOR DE LILLE TO ELECT HER AS CHAIRPERSON, WHO IS THE DA FEDEX TO SAY SHE IS NOT COMPETENT? Dear supporters of this petition Thank you for your continued support. Our petition now stands at 1,541 supporters and growing each day. If an International body like the Global Parliament of Mayors has appointed Mayor Patricia De Lille as the new chairperson of this body, and we the voters of Cape Town have voted for her as the Mayoral candidate of Cape Town, who is the DA Federal Executive to tell us that we should have no confidence in Aunty Pat as mayor of Cape Town. The DA is undermining Mayor Patricia De Lille’s role as chairman of the Global Parliament of Mayors by petty political infighting for party positions before the 2019 elections. They are forgetting the bigger picture and the role Mayor De Lille has played in the past to place Cape Town on the international agenda and her future role on an international level. We may ascribe this to the myopic, parochial, political approach of the ‘liberal boys club’ of the DA (none of them who has any international standing) who now wants to undermine the international status of Mayor Patricia De Lille, as the newly elected chairperson of the Global Parliament of Mayors. Former mayors that have contributed to the GPM ideology can be invited as honourable members. They have an advisory role, but no voting rights.” “ Cape Town’s very own Patricia de Lille has been appointed to the Global Parliament of Mayors (GPM), an organisation set up with the aim of effecting change on a local scale, by solving problems brought about by global challenges. De Lille joins the ranks of mayors from Brussels, Cologne, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles, Kampala City, Melbourne and Seoul, to name just few. We, as voters, could have voted for any other party in Cape Town, but we voted DA because we knew that Patricia De Lille was the mayoral candidate for the DA and we supported her as Mayor of Cape Town until 2021. To remove her as mayor by means cloak and dagger political back room machinations, is a betrayal to us as voters, because the DA has not tested our responses as voters yet regarding the De Lille saga. The voters have the last say, not the DA Federal Exco. The plan of the DA to remove Mayor De Lille will back fire on them. The political costs will be high and the haemorrhaging of votes for the DA during the 2019 national elections will be significant, especially in the Western Cape. Keep on fighting Aunty Pat!
