Multiple sources recently announced that the Arthur Blank's new Atlanta MLS team will be named Atlanta United FC. This name is poser trash and must be changed before it is too late. The term "United" is closely associated with the English Premier League with Manchester United being the most famous team to use the name. The term United grew organically in England from their club system over a hundred years ago and is now used by a few teams in the top league. It is unique to their sporting history and traditions. Mr. Blank, however, is clearly trying to appropriate that history and appeal to EPL fans. However, this smacks of inauthenticity. American soccer is trying to get out from under the shadow of the larger European leagues and show that we can have our own voice in world soccer. By using the term United Mr. Blank is appealing to the lowest form of self-hating American soccer fan: the euro poser. Notice my use of the word "soccer" in the previous paragraph. I used it because that is what the sport is called here in America. The letters "FC" stand for Football Club. The team will not play football. They will play soccer. This is another slap in the face to the real soccer fans out there. With this name Mr. Blank has shown that he is completely out of touch with soccer in America. Atlanta soccer fans want to create something that is truly ours that we can get behind and then Mr. Blank forces this rip off, poser, inauthentic, boring, out of touch, offensive name on us. No sir! This cannot stand! We need a new name!
