Mitigate the Financial Impact of the 2025 Reassessment Project on Low-Income Neighborhoods

The Issue

As residents of a low-income neighborhood in Buffalo, we have always strived to adapt to the economic demands, but the 2025 Reassessment project has pushed us to uncharted terrain. Our property values have seen an unwarranted increase of approximately $100,000 per home. This change has brought about a considerable tax increase of roughly $500. This might seem insignificant to some, but for families that already live paycheck to paycheck, it is dangerously significant.

Such a financial burden will have disastrous effects on our community, leading to potential home loss, community destabilization, and heightened financial stress on individuals and families. Our lives are already difficult as it is, and this situation has only added to our anxiety.

It's important to note that property tax increases, similar to the ones we are experiencing, are shown to disproportionately impact low-income, fixed-income, and minority homeowners in numerous studies including the report by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.

We believe that reassessment is essential but not at the cost of the economic welfare of the residents. We, therefore, petition our city council representatives to find ways to mitigate this financial impact—through exceptions, tax breaks, or other suitable means. Everyone deserves a chance at a secure life, and no one should be forced out of their homes due to unjust financial burden.

Help protect our homes, our lives, and our community. Please, sign this petition.
