Stricter laws in regards to Rabbits.
Stricter laws in regards to Rabbits.
The Issue
Rabbits are the 3rd most abandoned pet in the US. This is mostly due to lack of education by the people who buy them. After people grow tired of them, find out they require more care than originally though, or many other reasons they abandon them at shelters, drop them outside, or pass them on to someone else who knows as little as they did and the cycle then repeats.
I would like to see that people are only allowed to adopt rabbits from shelters in the State of Missouri where they can be properly educated before committing to give a rabbit a loving home. Not to mention most shelters spay or neuter before letting rabbits be adopted which helps cut down on the population.
In some other states they have made it to where pet stores must get their rabbits from shelters, but in my opinion this does not go far enough, because most pet stores are out for a profit as they are a business and may not educate someone properly leading back to the points in the first paragraph. Now this is not to say that shelters will educate people on the proper care of a rabbit, but they are more likely to do so, so the rabbit does not end up back in their care.
