Rename the Jefferson Davis Campus at MGCCC (Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College)

The Issue

I formerly taught at MGCCC, and I found it to be a diverse community of wonderful students, faculty, and staff.  The name of the campus where I taught, Jefferson Davis, is disrespectful. When I searched to see if there was a petition to change it, I found one with only 7 supporters from 5 years ago. I wish I had learned about it and could have helped support it, so I decided to write my own in hopes that current levels of awareness will rocket this call for positive change to success.

Your signature demonstrates your hope and will for enacting change—names matter. Use your voice to support this important positive evolution of MGCCC’s image.

The campus deserves a name that reflects the good work that students, educators, and staff carry out—not one that recalls the leadership of a confederacy that upheld slavery.

MGCCC, don’t  keep a name of a man who wouldn’t have allowed so many of your students to even acquire an education. Our signatures ask that you carry the positive momentum of the now into personal accountability and find a better name to represent the awesome institution that you are!
