What Happens When the Store Simply Gets a New Name?

A new CBS California Investigates report has raised an important question for consumers — and for mall operators. (view article here).

CBS reports that Bee & Co. at Westfield Topanga has closed following months of reporting about allegations of high-pressure sales tactics. CBS also reports that Bee & Co.'s parent company, Mazal Group, is connected to other businesses operating under different names, including The Soap Tree. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the companies deny wrongdoing.

That brings us back to Oxford Properties and Scarborough Town Centre.

What happens if a store closes — and simply reopens under another name?

Consumers at STC are already seeing a version of this question.

The Soap Tree is currently operating at STC. And the former Orogold Cosmetics location has also reopened as Glo by Voupré.

So we believe Oxford Properties should be asked:

What safeguards are in place to ensure that consumers are not simply encountering the same ownership, business relationships or practices under a different storefront name?

We are not asking Oxford to determine whether the allegations reported by CBS are proven.

We are asking why consumer concerns surrounding The Soap Tree at STC have not resulted in a more transparent response from the property's operator.

Because when a storefront changes, the questions don't necessarily disappear with the old sign.

Consumers deserve to know:

Who is behind the business?
What has been investigated?
And what protections are in place before the next consumer walks through the door?

A new name can change a storefront. It shouldn't make legitimate consumer concerns disappear.

That is why we are asking Oxford Properties to take a closer look — and why we will continue asking questions until consumers receive meaningful answers.
