Dear Friend,
Despite societal progresses over the last twenty years, the issue of Adoptees access to their own information remained largely ignored and unchanged, with Bill after proposed Bill being memorable only for their complete lack of knowledge as to the effects of Adoption and showing exactly how out of step Ireland’s lack of legislation on this area had become.
Aitheantas has brought much needed focus and momentum to this issue. We are now an established Department of Children and Youth Affairs ‘Key Stakeholder’, we participated in the open policy debate into the introduction of open and semi open Adoption and we participated in the Consultation process regarding submissions on Adoptee access to information. We are here for the long haul and determined to give voice to our community.
Today we reached a milestone. Our 20th supporting council was passed by Kildare County Council.
This means that 20 Councils, City and County, have unanimously supported Adoptees rights to their own information. This is a phenomenal breakthrough as regards creating awareness at grassroots political level and gathering support for this issue. This has never been done before with this issue, it is our initiative and we have led the way. We will continue to do so.
Our petition has over 6,600 signatures also supporting open access for Adoptees. This shows the very real, general public, support for this issue which we will continue to build on.
We also undertook a groundbreaking survey of Adoptees opinions and views. Our survey is the first comprehensive, authoritative survey of what adoptees actually want, what are their preferred terms.
We have had nearly 250 people complete our survey. We need now to deliver a loud, clear message based on this survey and to convert this raw data into a report so that we do justice to the people who have put their trust in us, we need your help to do this.
We want to present a comprehensive report based on our survey to the new government to push this matter forward. To do this we need the services of a graphic designer, an illustrator and a report writer.

We want to present a comprehensive report based on our survey to the new government to push this matter forward. To do this we need the services of a graphic designer, an illustrator and a report writer. We estimate that this will cost approximately €3,000. This is a lot of money but we need to do this to produce our report properly.
It seems like a lot of money but to put this in simple terms, if everyone who signed and supported our petition could give €5, we’d be able to go ahead with the report.
Could you chip in just €5 to support us? https://action.uplift.ie/campaigns/adoptee-rights-book
We have done so much as an unfunded group in just over a year, we have many more groundbreaking initiatives planned - but we need your help and support this to get the ball rolling - please follow the link to give what you can to help us, because we are worth it.
Thank you so much for your ongoing support!
