At this stage I should acknowledge Anna Robinson, Poet and Lecturer at University of East London. I made contact with Anna a year ago, having seen her post on a family history forum dated 2003, which appealed for information regarding a certain Sarah Chapman married to Charles Henry Dearman in relation to the Matchgirls Strike. I was excited to think my ancestor had such an influential past. I had not known anything about it before reading Anna's post, by chance, in 2016. Despite the intervening years between Anna's post and my reading it, I managed to contact her and was delighted to find that she had written her MA thesis with Sarah Chapman as the main subject. The thesis, completed in 2004, was entitled, 'Neither Hidden Nor Condescended To: Overlooking Sarah Chapman'. Anna had discovered Sarah's grave in 2004. She gave me enough information for me to visit the Cemetery and find the grave, and its dreadful state, in early 2017. I am so grateful to Anna for revealing Sarah's past to me. Manor Park Cemetery has offered a gesture of goodwill to keep the grave tidy and to add flowers twice a year, and they have made offers of various ways to preserve Sarah's name. However, they still intend to mound over and we know that the Cemetery does not keep any survey records of exactly where mounded over graves are. The graves of Sarah's husband and one of their daughter's has already been lost. At this very moment, an area the Cemetery has started the process of mounding over an area close to Sarah's grave and its only a matter of time before they reach the area in which Sarah is buried. We have noticed that other graves near Sarah appear to have been tended in recent times. It is sad that those descendants will not know of the mounding threat unless they happen to visit when the Cemetery posts notices.
