Just before the summer holidays, the Government published a raft of documents on implementing civil partnerships for opposite-sex couples. We’re thrilled to be at this final implementation stage!
 
As part of the process, the Government is consulting on whether opposite-sex married couples should be able to convert their marriage into a civil partnership. Please respond to the consultation by Tuesday 20th August https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/OSCPconsultation/
 
Our personal view is that married couples should be allowed to convert their marriage to a civil partnership to enable them to formalise their relationship how they want without having to get divorced and then form a civil partnership – a needlessly time-consuming and expensive process.
 
We also think that conversion from marriage to civil partnership (and vice-versa) should be left open indefinitely for everyone, same-sex and opposite-sex couples alike, so that couples can switch from one to another if their views or circumstances change, or if they move somewhere where only one type of relationship is recognised.
 
Overall, we want to maximise personal freedom so that everyone can define and take responsibility for their relationships on their own terms.
