Dear supporters,
We’re delighted to tell you that the Supreme Court will hear our case against the continued ban on different-sex couples’ access to civil partnerships. This is pretty huge because, as our solicitor, Louise Whitfield, puts it: "the Supreme Court only gives permission for a very small number of cases each year - those that are the most important for the court to consider."
You may recall that we lost very narrowly at the Court of Appeal. The lead judge, Lady Justice Arden, accepted our case on almost every point, but was outvoted by her two fellow judges, who concluded that the government should be allowed just a little more time to make a decision.
The Government has already had more than enough time to open civil partnerships to all, but has still made no public commitment to act.
So we have no choice but to go to the Supreme Court. With a young family and busy professionals lives, that’s something we’d rather not do. Our legal costs alone will be £25,000. We don’t have the financial resources to do this alone. We need your help. So please, if you can, donate now: https://www.gofundme.com/ecpcampaigns
Any excess funds will be used for ongoing campaigning work. That will include building further political support to keep up the pressure on the government to officially commit to extending civil partnerships to all.
The government and society as a whole have everything to gain: Extending civil partnerships is fair, would help families across the country, and is supported by a clear majority of the public: 57% are in favour and only 20% opposed, according to a 2017 Populus survey. It’s time the UK’s three million mixed-sex couples can access greater legal and financial security.
We expect our case to be heard in May 2018, and will let you know the exact dates once we have them.
Thank you for your encouragement and support.
In appreciation,
Charles Keidan and Rebecca Steinfeld
