

The Elephant Collective are delighted to announce that their Multimedia Exhibition will be showing in Wexford Town.
The Official Opening takes place at Wexford Arts Centre on Friday 11th January 2019 and the exhibition continues until 16th Feb 2019.

6 pm guest speaker Margaret Cullen from Access 2000 – whose community group ran the very successful postcard campaign in 2017.
6.30pm Documentary screening ‘Picking up the threads’ at
7 pm Panel Discussion. The Panel will include:
Dr Jo Murphy Lawless a sociologist who has written extensively on the politics of birth. She is a member of the cross – national birth project group whose book ‘Untangling the Maternity Crisis: Action for Change’ was published in 2018. She has taught midwifery students for the last 11 years.
Patricia Hughes, a director of Midwifery & Nursing in two of the country’s largest maternity and neonatal teaching hospitals from 2005-2016. A proponent of continuous quality improvement and change she has participated at national level on Steering Groups and Inquiries. She worked in the DOH (UK) 1992-1993 on the establishment of the first Confidential Enquiry into Stillbirths & Deaths in Infancy (CESDI) which continues to date, now under the umbrella of MBRRACE.
Derek and Mignon Underwood who lost their baby Conor in 2012, Conor was stillborn as a result of proven medical negligence, they had to fight for six years to gain justice for Conor. Since then they have been campaigning for legislation so that no other family will have to fight the way they had to fight. Conor’s Law is currently before Dail Eireann at second stage.
The exhibition at Wexford Art Centre will be a welcome opportunity to advance the campaign about maternal death inquests and to connect with the key reproductive justice challenges facing anyone who encounters our maternity services in addition it is a crucial step in gaining more public accountability.
Public engagement is anticipated through two other events which take place during the Wexford Exhibition:
- A free to attend Craft morning will be held at Wexford Arts Centre on Thursday 31st January from 10.30am – 12.30pm, in order to create responses to the work on display.
- A free public talk on ‘Art in Activism’ will be held at the Wexford Arts Centre on Thursday 7th February at 2pm. Invited speakers include Artist Martina Hynan, member of The Elephant Collective; Dr Orla Ryan, Lecturer at Wexford College of Art and Design; and Wexford County Councillor Tony Walsh.
