"Back in 2015 - 11th Dec, the Bill calling for mandatory Inquests into Maternal deaths successfully passed through the 2nd Stage of the Dail and into committee stage.
Sadly less than 10 days later we heard about the Maternal death of Maureen Courtney in Longford, this gave us a new sense of urgency and we asked our supporters to lobby their local politicians calling for Mandatory Inquests into Maternal deaths.
Heartfelt gratitude to all of you that did this, but the government dragged their heels and nothing happened.

We were further devastated on hearing of Tracy Campbell Fitzpatrick’s Maternal death in Kilkenny March on 28th 2016 and again on hearing that Malak Thawley died on May 8th 2016.

Throughout 2016 and into 2017 young healthy women continued to die through maternal deaths and ‘the Elephant Collective’ continued to travel the country putting pressure on the government to make this issue a priority. Despite all our efforts on 10th May 2017 the Coroner’s bill failed to pass through the 3rd stage.
Again we took to the road and you took to letter writing and talking, and now we have good news.

We are pleased to let you know that yesterday Sept 19th 2018 a revised version of the Bill, calling for Mandatory Inquests into Maternal deaths successfully passed through the 2nd stage of the Dail and on to the committee stage.

Indication is that it will be successful this time. But it is vital that we let the government know that we have not gone away, we are watching, and that we respectfully demand that the Bill passes through all stages this time with utmost speed and urgency.

Therefore we are asking you again to write letters, emails, and visit politicians’ clinics or make phone calls to put pressure on the government. We need Mandatory Inquests for Maternal Deaths to be urgently passed into Law."
