Let’s rise up and take a stand for the most vulnerable members of our society! We must stop the proposed costly litigation by the City of Milpitas...Instead of wasting our resources, we urge the Milpitas City Council to do the right thing and work with the County and Jamboree Housing to help house the homeless in our county and our community. 

The number of homeless residents in Santa Clara County jumped from about 6,500 in 2015 to nearly 10,000 last year. Another 20,000 people could fall into homelessness over the next five years — far more than the county’s supportive housing system can accommodate. Some of these people live in Milpitas. We have a moral obligation to help. 

Jamboree Housing has partnered with the County to convert an apartment hotel in Milpitas to permanent, supportive housing using funding from the Measure A Affordable Housing Bond, the State of California’s Project Homekey, and additional funding of their own. This project will bring unhoused residents into a home with services and support – including case management, life skills education, and meaningful activities. This approach results in more than a 90% success rate in residents staying housed. Unfortunately Milpitas City Council threatens to sue.

This project is not a shelter. It is permanent housing. Residents won’t have to leave every day or move out after a brief stay. There is no onsite intake center - individuals are prescreened and referred by participating agencies. Once they sign a lease, residents may remain as long as they follow the rules. Onsite staff will report unsafe activity to the police and ensure residents and neighbors are acting responsibly. Security cameras and a gated pedestrian/vehicle entry will be installed.

We are not alone - many similar projects have been built or are underway with Measure A funding - many in San Jose, others in Cupertino, Morgan Hill, and other communities - and with Homekey funds in San Jose and Mountain View. 

City Council: Please act today and know that you have our support.  Drop the plan to sue and work with the other parties to make this project a success!
