Military Families with Disabilities Continue to be Overlooked by the DoD

The Issue

Today the DoD Announced Immediate and Long-term Actions to Help Strengthen the Economic Security and Stability of Service Members and Their Families; we took note that the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) [a mandatory enrollment program for disabled military dependants] was not included on this list. To note, even in the announced changes, nothing indicates the DoD took into account families with a loved one with a disability in any of their programmatic changes. Did #EFMP voices have a seat at the table? There are approximately 146K families enrolled in the program waiting on initiatives and NDAA language already published to be fulfilled.

There are significant pain points that persist for EFMP families in regard to assignments, healthcare, family support services, program policy, and special education.

We ask that you add EFMP to this list as a primary focus and implement immediate and long-term action for families. The Department of Defense should create an independent commission consisting of subject matter experts from the public and private sectors to recommend best practices to support military families impacted by disabilities. Our suggestion is outlined in more detail in the "Blueprint for Change."

We are willing to meet to discuss and stand ready to address any questions at info@exceptionalmilitaryfam.com.

Exceptional Families of the Military (EFM) is a volunteer-led, 501c(3) non-profit organization specializing in helping DoD families enrolled in DoD's Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). We are EFMP families ourselves and have multiple online support groups with about 7,000 EFMP family members DoD-wide.    We provide direct support, support groups, and also work on legislative and policy priorities on behalf of our families. We are part of the Tricare for Kids Coalition and the EFMP coalition, the largest group representing EFMP families.
