Sevenoaks town 20 mph scheme - Consultation closes this Thursday (14 Dec)

Thank you for supporting the petition for safer, 20 mph streets around St John’s School, a couple of years ago. This has really worked well in the streets immediately next to the school, but many of our children still have to walk or cycle along 30 mph streets to get to the school each day - and all of them have to walk or cycle along 30 mph streets to reach the town centre, leisure centre, sports and clubs, the railway station or their friends’ houses.

This is not safe for them – 362 people have been injured in accidents in Sevenoaks town in the last 10 years. There is a new scheme under consultation right now to address this and introduce 20 mph limits in a small area of 1.5 square miles which includes 12 schools and the town centre.

Introducing 20 mph limits in this area will lower top speeds and drastically cut injuries. In addition, it will encourage active travel (walking and cycling), reduce emissions and pollution, reduce the impact of traffic and actually save money – the scheme costs are dwarfed by the savings from reduced injuries, lost working time, use of emergency services etc.

As the proposed scheme covers a busy urban area it will not have a noticeable impact on car journey times (per report to the Department for Transport on effects of 20 mph in built-up areas in 2018).

Please support the scheme by completing the 2-minute consultation via the link below. All members of the household can complete this, both over and under 18. No registration is necessary, and it takes just two minutes to make our town, a safer, better place.

The consultation closes this Thursday, on 14th December
