Dear Friend of the Chili Bowl,

Thank you for joining more than 985 concerned citizens who have signed the petition urging councilmember Mike Bonin to pause the pending demolition permit and help to move L.A.’s last Chili Bowl from its longtime home at 12244 West Pico Boulevard to a safe location within the city of Los Angeles.

In our last update, we told you that the Los Angeles Conservancy said there would be PLUM Committee re-vote on the potential Chili Bowl landmarking in response to the non-profit’s legal case. This was initially scheduled for today, then rescheduled for Tuesday, December 7 at 2pm. (Also on the agenda is the similar case of Taix French Restaurant, responding to the legal challenge filed by Silver Lake Heritage Trust.)

We will submit this petition with all your signatures before this meeting, urging the PLUM Committee to move the landmark process forward to full City Council. But a personal comment from you individually can also go a long way in helping to save the Chili Bowl. Some people who don’t understand that you can have both new housing construction and a landmark on the same parcel have already sent in comments opposing the landmark, so we need to drown them out!

If you go to the Council File page and click the button that says NEW, you can submit a public comment. Do this as soon as possible. Your comment can be very simple, or it can be long. Just be sure to say first that you are glad they are re-voting on the Chili Bowl Historic-Cultural Monument nomination, and that you support it becoming a landmark. If you tried to call in at the previous hearing and didn’t get called on, please say so. After that, you may say anything you want the decision makers to know, about why the Chili Bowl and places like it matter to you, your concerns about the public being shut out by Brown Act violations, or your hopes and dreams for this building.

Because the city does not always properly upload and post these public comments, you should also send your public comment by email to the members of PLUM and to Councilman Mike Bonin (in whose district the Chili Bowl sits). Please cc us on the email, too.

You can also listen live to the PLUM hearing on December 7 at 2pm, and try to call in if you’d also like to make an in-person comment. The agenda will be posted soon here.

That’s all the news that fits in a giant Chili Bowl. Please continue to share the petition (http://www.change.org/SaveTheChiliBowl) with friends who love the Chili Bowl and want to see it saved. And stay tuned for additional updates as they happen.

Yours for Los Angeles,
