Release open source code to newer id Tech game engines and game SDKs
The Issue
Microsoft has a unique opportunity to release the source code of the newer “id Tech” game engines, following the tradition of id Software with GPL licensed release of the previous version of the engine as a newer version is used in-house. Since the last release of an id Tech engine was the Doom 3 BFG edition engine in 2012, the world of visual computing has changed and the players of the games using this engine are unable to update the game to utilize newer available features or provide additional bug fixes, and are unable to further mod these great games. Microsoft has a hero’s task of fulfilling the moral good cause of bringing this next era of gaming and modding to the Microsoft Windows platform (primarily) while ensuring future interoperability and compatibility with other platforms and hardware architectures. It is the right thing to do, and engage the player and development community behind id Software games to evolve the Windows (and Xbox?) game technologies for the players, students, hobbyists and professional developers to enrich these games, create new works and bring everyone into the 21st century to compete with alternative proprietary technologies and engines like Unreal and Unity engine. Thank you for your support of making this dream a reality.
