The Issue

We are attempting to stop the eradication of feral cats through a new bill passed on September 25 2021, labeling feral cats as invasive species in Michigan. Ferals are a huge part of our ecosystem and have been for years! They can not be considered as an invasive species; especially in Michigan where they have lived for thousands of years alongside Cougars, Mountain Lions, Black Panthers, Lynx, Bobcats And Wolverines (not by the hands of humans). You remove them and the rats will eat every bird And Toy Poodle in sight. And because we are an agricultural state, many farms and barns depend on ferals to keep the mice out of their feed and away from their gardens. Mice also scare the livestock. Cats do not eat from gardens and do not hunt livestock, they are no threat to our environment. Most importantly, who decides whether a cat is feral or friendly? This bill would allow domesticated pets to be targeted also just because someone sees them outside. This bill clearly violates the definition of an invasive species by labeling feral cats under this category. Studies as well as my direct experience having boots on the ground as a feral rescue organization, shows that these cats are a direct resource to our environment.
